"A team who doesn’t know its past has a thin present and it's future lies in shadow'" Hapoel Haifa football club was formed at April 24th 1924 under the name "Club Sportive Hapoel"; Hapoel Haifa is the first "hapoel" club in Israel. The club was formed by 36 men and women who wanted to develop the laborer sport in the city of Haifa for the sake of the youth and the proletariat in the area.
In 1928 when the IFA was formed the club was registered and it became one of the "top guns" in Israeli football of the 1930's, the club took part in the Israeli cup and later on joined the Israeli football league when it was formed. Although the club was relatively successful it only had 1 major achievement during that period, when Hapoel reached the 1932 Israeli cup final and faced the British police, it was the first time(out of seven) in which the team made it to the cup final.
After Israel was founded Hapoel Haifa remained a big side in Israeli football. The 50's the 60's and the 70's were a great period for the red club, the club moved on to play at their legendry home of Kiryat Haim stadium (in which they remained until 1991), the clubs biggest accomplishment of the time was winning the Israeli cup 3 times, in 1963 the club won the cup for the first time after defeating the rival club Maccabi Haifa 1:0, the following year the club reached the final once again but they fell before the mighty Maccabi Tel Aviv after 3 games (2 replays), in 1966 the club won the trophy once again(for the second time) after beating Shimshon Tel Aviv 2:1. The next title came 8 years later when Hapoel won the Israeli cup for the third time after wining Hapoel Petah Tikva 1:0 in an unforgettable match.
The 80's were really rough on the club, in 1981 the club was relegated for the first time, the club was promoted back at 1984 and 2 years afterwards the club was relegated once again and had gotten in financial trouble. This condition had changed in the early 90's when a club supporter named Rubi Shapira began supporting the club financialy after years in which he lived in Nigeria. In the beginning he only gave the club liquid money to save it self from bankruptcy and help it win promotion to the top division (while keeping himself anonymous). In 1994 Shapira purchased the club from the laborer Union and thus began the Shapira age at Hapoel Haifa.
After a period of unbalanced transfers of the finest mangers and players in Israel the club decided to change its policy and the reins were given to Eli Guttmann. At 1998-1999 season the fans wishes were answered, at last Hapoel Haifa had won the league title! (At may 8th 1999). The following season Hapoel Haifa competed on the European level, the club had knocked out the Turkish side Besiktas and fell before the giants club of Valencia (at the UEFA champions league qualifying rounds) and had managed to beat the Belgium Club Brugge at the first round of the UEFA cup. The European journey had ended at the feet of Ajax Amsterdam players who had managed to beat Hapoel at home at the result of 3:0 but Hapoel fans had one final moment of joy when the team succeeded in beating the Dutch giants 1:0 at their home in Amsterdam arena.
The golden age at Hapoel Haifa ended in 2001 when Rubi Shapira had ended his life in his home in Nigeria (because of financial difficulties and high debts) not long afterwards the club had gotten relegated for the third time, the club stayed in the Second division for 2 years until the club managed to get promoted yet again (while being ran by liquidators). But the pain had just began, after 3 years of being ran by liquidators the club had been taken over by Yoav Katz (an Israeli businessman currently residing in the USA). The Katz age had began, a year after reaching the Israeli cup final (lost to Bnei Sakhnin 4:1) and getting promoted to the Israeli top flight, the club got relegated once again while performing badly under the hands of Nir Levin and the following year things only got worst with Ran Ben Shimon (a former red icon) in charge the club preformed awfully and he was sacked at the end of the season.
